Virginia Turner, Principal, Lafayette Elementary
The 2009-2010 school year is my sixth year at Lafayette. I have found Lafayette to be a wonderful environment for children. The staff is exceptional, the parent group very supportive, and the students full of curiosity and eager to learn.
I have been an administrator in several other settings prior to coming to the Seattle Schools. I started my administrative career on Bainbridge Island where I was the assistant principal at Woodward Middle School for 5 years. After that I was the principal at Maplewood K-8 school, a unique parent cooperative in the Edmonds School District. During the 2003-2004 school year I was the director of the American International School of Lome in Togo, West Africa, an enlightening and rewarding experience.
Prior to becoming an administrator I was a teacher in the Everett School District and in Istanbul, Turkey. I earned my Bachelors degree and Masters degree from Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington.
My husband is also an educator. We have two daughters. In our free time we enjoy traveling internationally, spending time on Lopez Island, and working on our 1914 home, which seems to take its toll on our time and our bank account.
